African Transkei

African Transkei is one of the few widely grown Psilocybe cubensis strains with roots on the African continent. The story growers repeat is that it was collected in the early 2000s along South Africa's Wild Coast, in the former Transkei region, growing in grassy, dung-rich coastal pasture near the Indian Ocean. From there it spread through the hobby-cultivation community and has remained a steady favourite ever since.

In the bag, Transkei looks a little different from the golden-brown strains most people start with. Dried caps are often pale, leaning toward ivory or light tan with a slightly darker centre, on thick, whitish stems. Fruits tend to be small to medium and fairly uniform. Experienced users reach for this one when they want something bright and visual without a heavy, sedating body feel.

We rate African Transkei as Moderate (●●○○) on our four-point scale. It sits in the everyday range for cubensis and is not one of the strains people describe as unusually intense. That said, "moderate" is a strain-level average, not a guarantee: batches vary, and individual sensitivity plays a large role. Is African Transkei a good strain for beginners?
Many people think so. Its moderate potency and lighter body load make it easier to gauge than stronger strains, and the visual character is usually described as pleasant rather than overwhelming at 1–1.5g. Start low, keep the evening free, and have water and a comfortable space ready.

Why do the dried caps look so pale?
That is normal for this strain. Transkei is known for lighter, ivory-to-tan caps rather than the deep golden brown of many other cubensis strains. Colour is not an indicator of potency, so a pale bag is not a weak bag, and a dark one is not necessarily a strong one.

How does Transkei compare to Golden Teacher?
Both are widely regarded as approachable cubensis strains and both are popular with newer users. The comparison you will hear most often is that Golden Teacher leans warmer and more introspective, while Transkei leans more visual and physically lighter. Plenty of people keep both around for different moods.

For beginners: We always suggest starting your dosage off with 1-2grams and then waiting a period of 40-60 minutes. If you feel like you can handle more after that, take an additional 1-2 grams.

Experienced Users: As an experienced user you will already know what works for you. Generally we don’t recommend taking more then 5 grams as that should already send you to the moon. We would even say stick to 3.5g-4g if you are experienced.

Warning: Some Mushrooms are more potent then others however due to the nature of a hallucogenic trip, when consuming you should always estimate that the mushroom you are taking is very potent. This is because magic mushrooms can hit people harder or lighter based on a variety of factors such as weight, height, full stomach or empty stomach, last time you took mushrooms etc.

Tolerance: For those who are unaware, the way tolerance works with magic mushrooms is that after consuming mushrooms, your tolerance to them increases very fast. So if you try using them the next day, you will have to take double the amount of mushrooms to reach the same trip as you did yesterday, and you still might not even reach that. However, the tolerance also goes away quick, within 1-2weeks your tolerance will be back to normal. Regardless, we don’t recommend taking mushrooms consecutively day after day. You probably wont want to though since the trip of magic mushrooms take a lot of physical and mental energy and you should use the next day to just chill and recoup.
