Mexican is one of the oldest names in the Psilocybe cubensis world and, for a lot of people, the first strain they ever tried. The name points to the cubensis line associated with Mexico, a country with a long mushroom tradition, and this strain has been passed between growers for decades. It has a reputation as a friendly, predictable classic rather than a heavy hitter.

Potency

We rate Mexican as Moderate ●●○○ on our four-dot scale. Among cubensis strains it sits toward the gentler end, which is a big part of why it is so often recommended to beginners. Dried Mexican usually arrives as small-to-medium fruits with light tan to caramel caps and slender stems, often with some blue bruising from handling, which is normal for dried cubensis. We don't quote psilocybin percentages for any strain: natural potency varies from batch to batch and even from cap to cap, so treat our rating as a rough guide and let a careful dose do the talking.

Dosing

Our dosing bands are the same for every strain; what changes is where in the band you should start. Because Mexican is Moderate, the ranges below apply as written. First-timers should begin at the bottom of the Low band, and anyone should give it at least 90 minutes before deciding whether to take more.

FAQ

Is Mexican the same thing as Psilocybe mexicana?
No, and the shared name causes a lot of confusion. Our Mexican is a strain of Psilocybe cubensis, the species behind nearly every dried mushroom sold in Canada. Psilocybe mexicana is a separate species, best known for producing the sclerotia sold as "truffles" in the Netherlands. They are related, but they are not the same product.

Is Mexican a good first strain?
It is one of the most common recommendations for exactly that reason. Its moderate potency and the light, sociable character people describe leave more room for error than a Very Strong strain would. Start in the Low band, keep the setting relaxed, and have a sober friend around if it's your first time.

I've had stronger strains before. Will Mexican still do anything?
Yes. Moderate doesn't mean weak; it means a given weight tends to land softer than it would with a Strong or Very Strong strain. Experienced users who want a fuller effect from Mexican typically dose toward the upper end of the Moderate band, and the High band is very much a full experience. Our advice is still to work up rather than assume.
